The Top 10 Mistakes that New Pokemon Trainers Make

09. Tunnel Vision Team Building

This is the most common mistake that new trainers make - they start the game with their Starter Pokemon naturally enough, and as they progress through the first zone they capture an additional five Pokemon to make up their first team - and then fail to adjust and change it.

We call that Tunnel Vision Team Building.

Part of this is a natural comfort with what you know. The game is new and unfamiliar, you picked up these great Pokemon, and they are working out for you! You are leveling them up and you feel justifiably proud of that.

The problem is that your team consists of your Starter - let's say a Fire-type, three Grass-type, a Normal-type, and a Flying-type.

You may have leveled them up nicely, and you may know their moves inside and out, but that is not a balanced team and eventually you are going to run into a Gym Battle in which you get the floor mopped with your team.

Total KO! Badness personified.

Nothing sucks like discovering that your killer team is less than lethal. So what do you do?

Both X and Y come with 18 different types of Pokemon, including the new fairy type, and each and every one has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. More to the point, each is valuable in and of itself!

The best approach is to test the waters with the different Pokemon you have captured and added to the Storage System at the Pokemon Centers - and find one or more of each type that you like and then keep them leveled to your teams base level.

Yes that is a lot of work, but the dividends are enormous. For one thing you will be in a position to reform your team to meet the challenge of every Gym - and the different Legendary encounters you may have. What is more, you will have the right stuff for battling other trainers too!

As a trainer it is your solemn duty to learn which types are strong against other types, and conversley which are weak - and to NEVER put your Pokemon in a battle in which they are at a severe type disadvantage - because that is not fair to your Pokemon - who will literally battle to the death to defend you if called upon to do so.

Remember, loyalty up, loyalty down -- it only works when you know what you are doing.

And of course this mistake is the partner to the first one above - since failing there will cause you to fail here!
