Whenever you come across a wall that looks suspect it is worthwhile striking it to see if something is hiding behind it. If it is an illusory wall it will be removed and reveal what is hiding behind it. This could be something useful you can pick up or even an opening for a shortcut. If you are playing Souls III online pay attention to player messages on the ground as they will help you find illusory walls.
In Dark Souls III there are a lot of mimics, these are monsters that take the appearance of chests and will attack you when you try to open them. Get into the habit of whenever you find a chest to strike it first before opening it, so you ensure that it is not one of these monsters.
If you do this and the chest is in fact a mimic you will be able to get in a few free hits before it stands up and fights you. It is also a good idea to not attempt to open chests until you have first cleared out the enemies in the room.
A lot of the shields in Dark Souls III will not absorb 100% of the hit damage, this means that even if you did successfully manage to block an enemy attack you would still sustain some damage. Also, when you are switching weapons or dual-wielding you will have no defense and be completely vulnerable.
In these situation rolling comes in useful as it will allow you to avoid taking enemy damage altogether. Rolling uses the same stamina pool used for attacks and blocking and can be increased by investing in the Endurance stat.
The only form of currency used in Dark Souls III is Souls, and they are gained when you defeat enemies. Make sure during the early game you use them to put points into Vigor in order to increase your overall HP. This is more important than Strength and other stats at this stage of the game as it will enable you to sustain more damage during fights. Once you get your Vigor to 17 or 18 you can begin to think about the rest of your build.
If you are new to the game and not sure what character class to pick it is recommended that you start off as the Knight. The reason this is a good choice is it comes equipped with a decent sword and shield from the outset that will serve you well for at least the first ten hours of the game. The Knight also comes with plenty of points in Strength and Vigor which will help you during fights with enemies as it will enable you to deal good damage and take more hits before going down.
