Murder in the Alps is set in 1932 and is a free-to-play fully interactive crime game that has plenty of plot twists as you try to learn the identity of the killer. You take the role of Anna Myers, a young journalist and must use your investigative skills to discover what has happened. You'll need to find clues, gather helpful objects and solve puzzles.
The 'Main' menu is split into five sections. The first section is 'Play' and it is here where you open up the 'Chapter' or 'Subchapter' selection screen and enter the actual game. The second section is Achievements which displays the achievements you have earned during the game. The third section is 'Options' which you can go to during the game to change game settings such as sound volume. The fourth section is 'Help' which is pretty much self explanitory and the fifth and final section is 'Energy' which takes you to the in-game shop where you are given various options on refilling your energy, most of which involves parting with real money.
The game is divided into Chapters and Subchapters which you can view in the 'Play' menu. To unlock a chapter you must first complete the previous chapter. Next to each Chapter there is text that shows the Subchapters, which are sub-plots involving different characters and also a summary of what happened in it.
Murder in the Alps is an ongoing game with new Chapters and Subchapters being developed but at the time of this guide the game consists of:
Part 1
Deadly Snowstorm: Chapter 1
The Phantom: Chapter 2
Atlantic Connection: Chapter 3
Part 2
The Heir: Chapter 1
Exiled Dead: Chapter 2
The Widow: Chapter 3
The Only Redemption: Chapter 4
Part 3
Ladies of the Night: Coming Soon
As you progress through the game you will be using the 'Diary' and 'Map' buttons found at the top of the screen to help solve the case. The 'Diary' button allows you to read Anna's thoughts, find clues, and see the plot twists as the story develops. The function of the 'Map' button is to open a map that displays your location and various points of interest. On the left side of the screen is the 'Inventory' menu which shows the usable items you have collected in the current chapter. At the top right of the screen is the 'Hints' button which when used will show you the next step you need to take to advance the story. The 'Hint' button uses energy and must be recharged before you can use it again. Next to the 'Hints' button is the 'Strategy Guide' button which if you have purchased the strategy guide from the in-game shop will open the part of the Strategy Guide that corresponds to your current progress in the chapter.
During gameplay itself you will encounter hidden object scenes which will be highlighted by sparkles. In these scenes your task is to find the objects that are listed at the top of the screen. If the name of the object is in red it means that additional objects are required before you can interact with the object. There is always the possibility that you may have to visit one location several times to find all the items and clues. To use the objects you have found and are in your inventory you simply have to drag them from there to the spot or object you want to use them on. Also at some of the locations during gameplay you will come across a mini-game which you will need to solve in order to proceed. The instructions to these mini-games can be found in the game itself.
