Sequence 1 -- A Sort of Homecoming

First, welcome to the first memory sequence in the game!  Since this is a game (and series) that is rich in history and lore, each Sequence will begin with an introduction of sorts (this section) that will explain some of the important parts that most gamers will miss simply because they are not an in-your-face part of the game.  Of course gamers who are intensely interested in the game and story, and who drink up every entry offered, will not need this as much as others...

The first thing that we should do is introduce you to the players -- there is Desmond Miles (the main character and protagonist) who for most of his life was completely unaware that he was the child of a long line of Assassins.

Born March 13th, 1987, Desmond ended up rejecting his parents way of life and heading out on his own, taking a string of dead-end jobs, the last of which was as a bartender, while he tried to find himself.  He knew there was an open question in his life, what he did not know was that it has more to do with his ancestors than he could ever imagine.

Descended from a long line who had sworn their allegiance to the Assassin Order, among his many ancestors are Altair Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who will very quickly come to play an important role in his life once he learns the answer to the question he did not know he needed to ask -- but before that happened, there was Desmond Miles, loner, slacker, and itinerant geek.

Who is Desmond Miles?

In September 2012, Desmond was kidnapped and incarcerated by shadowy elements from a multinational corporation called Abstergo Industries, which turned out to be the modern day front for the ancient Order of the Templar -- which is what people are talking about when they use words like Illuminati and New World Order -- who grabbed him because they have a plan to recover that which was lost centuries before, and thus complete their conquest to create one world government, and one world order.

Using a machine called the Animus they force Desmond to relive the memories of his ancestor, Altair Ibn-La'Ahad, so that they can acquire a map of the locations for the "Pieces of Eden" that were spread across the Earth, hidden by Desmond's Assassin ancestors to protect them from the Templar.

Who is Desmond Miles?

With the help of an Assassin who has infiltrated the Templar ranks, Desmond escapes Abstergo and joins an Assassin cell in Italy that has its own Animus, which it intends to use to uncover the same information with the goal of preventing the Templar from succeeding in their nefarious plan!  Members of this elite Assassin Cell include Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane, and Lucy, the undercover Assassin and attractive geek grrl.  Once again thrust into an Animus, Desmond delves into the memories of a new ancestor, one Ezio Auditore, playboy and Assassin, in order to obtain his skills and memories.

Thanks to Ezio's memories, Desmond finds the location of the Apple of Eden but just as he celebrates that success, his body is taken over by Juno, a member of the First Civilization, and he is forced to stab Lucy, killing her.   Due to some unforeseen side-effects of the Animus, Desmond falls into a coma, and that ends the adventure -- until now!

In Revelations Desmond has been placed into the "safe mode" of the Animus in order to find and recover his memories, and reconstruct his consciousness, so that he can repair the damage to his brain and come out of the coma.  He has some help with this, as he encounters the AI clone of another Assassin who was kidnapped by Abstergo and forced to do the same thing that Desmond did for them -- though without success.  His name is Clay Kaczmarek, AKA Subject 16, and all that is left of him appears to be this copy of his personality that is trapped in the Animus.  So endeth the lesson on Desmond Miles.
